Are you familiar with a product called BioGnat? They say they are an alternative to Mosquito Bits. It is a granular product added to potted plant soil to control fungas gnats.

Thank you for your question. It has been assigned to me.

The active ingredient in BioGnat is a bacterium called Bacillus thuringiensis. The variety of this bacterium in BioGnat is known as israelensis. It is often referred to as “BTI”. When properly and consistently applied, it is effective in killing a variety of flying insects including fungus gnats. Here is some information about it:

Both BioGnat and Mosquito Bits contain the same active ingredient (BTI). The levels of BTI differ between these two products. In BioGnat the concentration of BTI is 37.4%, whereas in Mosquito Bits the concentration of BTI is between 2.86% and 3%. Because of the higher BTI level in BioGnat, it would be expected to be more effective than Mosquito Bits when dealing with fungus gnats.

When using either product, keep in mind that they kill only the larvae of fungus gnats and not the adults. For either product, don’t expect an immediate reduction in the numbers of adult gnats. There are “sticky traps” available at most garden centers that can be used to reduce adult gnat populations. See:
