Question About Pruning Serviceberry Bushes #926857

Asked March 26, 2026, 6:05 PM EDT

Hello “Ask A Master Gardener” - I have been Googling pruning for Serviceberries and have gotten mixed messages. Could you give me your opinion on when is a good time to prune for Serviceberries. I live in a condo complex on a beautiful marsh land area. Serviceberry bushes were planted before my time here. They have been neglected somewhat and I have been asked to help out. Last winter I built fencing to protect from rabbits and now that spring is around the corner I think pruning is in order. Should I prune now? Or should I wait till after they flower and fruit? They do not fruit a lot recently and am inclined to do a structural pruning in April. I think they need shaping and kind of a “restart” What do you think? I have attached a few pics. A bit hard to see because everything is kind of gray now :) Thank you so much! Appreciate the feedback! Cyndee
