This is a fungus that grows on damaged wood. It is suggested by my app to have a certified arborist come out and check it out- especially since you value this tree. As a volunteer I am not a professional so I would encourage you to have the arborist take a look. I’m sorry I couldn’t be more help, but I think you need a definite answer.
