Flicker Nest Boxes #926760

We have just put up 2 nesting boxes on our house for the flickers. They are very interested, but have been pecking at the predator guard around the holes for the last couple of days - to no avail, of course. I'm worried that the holes are too small and they are trying to enlarge them. Should I take off the guards do they can enlarge the holes? They are currently 2 1/4 " wide. Thank you!
