Apple trees, spray #926703

Asked March 25, 2026, 8:17 AM EDT

When is it best to do the first spray on my apple trees…..will Neem oil as I understand it. Before the buds swell, no freezing temperatures or rain for 48 hours, water temperature must be 45 degrees minimum. Is there anything else I should know? I have pruned all 7 trees. I don’t think I used a horticultural oil for the first spray last year. I live in the most southern tier oof counties in Michigan.

Expert Response

A horticultural oil is a great first spray. It will coat trees for insects (scale) and limit diseases. We have not found Neem to be super effective. Just watch your temperatures... Horticultural oil will cause damage if temps drop below freezing.

Good luck.
