To pair or not to pear #926700

Asked March 25, 2026, 2:18 AM EDT

Last year we obtained a donation of a dwarf Chehalis apple tree from one of the largest nurseries in the Portland area. This year when I asked for another dwarf fruit tree I got a semi dwarf, weeping Santa Rosa plum tree in a plastic pot. I was not really thinking about the size of the weeping plum tree until we got it to the planting site and near.the Chehalis apple. It is way to large for the residents at this assisted living facility to work on some of whom are in wheelchairs. So I need to exchange the plum tree for one more manageable what kind of dwarf fruit tree would you recommend to place near the Chehalis apple. The facility is located in SE Portland in the lents area and the tree planting area faces East

Thank you for your question, David.  I suggest that you use the following comprehensive OSU resource to compare sizes of several fruit tree species to find one appropriate for your gardeners:  https://extension.oregonstate.edu/catalog/ec-819-growing-tree-fruits-nuts-home

I hope this is helpful.  Good luck!
