cutting back honeysuckle #926638

Asked March 24, 2026, 10:48 AM EDT

I need to replace a broken trellis with a mature honeysuckle attached. A lot of of the vines are firmly integrated and I will need to cut those vines back. Should I cut everything equally or leave some of the younger vines that can be carefully saved? Is this a good time to cut it back (end of March), or should I wait a few more weeks? Thank you!

Expert Response

Your thinking is correct. You can prune now and while you could cut everything back to near to the ground, the vine will recover quicker if you can leave younger vines to grow over the new trellis.
