Replacing Tree? #926533

Asked March 22, 2026, 9:18 PM EDT

Hi, We lost a big tree in the high winds earlier this year. We were planning on replacing it this month, but are wondering if it makes sense to wait given the higher temps and lack of moisture. If delaying makes sense, when would you recommend proceeding? Thank you, Cheryl

Expert Response

Hi Cheryl,
The best times to plant trees in Colorado are during early spring (March 15 to June 15) and fall (September 1 to October 15) for optimal growth and establishment.

An important consideration is the amount of water required by a newly planted tree.  They require daily water based on the size of tree you plant.  Size is the diameter of the trunk measured 6" above the soil line.  As a rule of thumb it takes one season to establish a new tree for each inch of diameter.

Attached is the CSU Extension Garden Notes: Care of Recently Planted Trees. This includes information about watering needs and general care.
