A metal circl with an engraved number on it #926518

I have a tree located very close to my residence that has a round metal disc on the tree with an engraved number and I’m concerned about what this number means because the tree appears to be falling apart. It has a hollow trunk and it has quite a few branches breaking off. I thought maybe the tree was marked for genetic reasons or monitoring but I’ve noticed in the last 5 years it seems to be struggling
