Use of Ceiling Fan in Outdoor Gazebo to Deter Flying Insects #926497

Asked March 22, 2026, 1:04 PM EDT

Will installing an outdoor ceiling fan in a gazebo keep flying insects away? Some articles on-line indicate that a fan can interrupt their flight plan. We use the area for dining in the evening or coffee in the morning. Any other IPM recommendations to reduce insect frequency? Do you believe "mosquito plants" work?

Expert Response

I doubt the fan would have any meaningful long-term impact. At the highest setting, it may interfere with flight of some of the smallest insects just beneath the fan.

"Mosquito-deterring" plants in pots will not reduce the numbers of mosquitos. Burning citronella candles may provide limited success at thwarting mosquitos.

For mosquito control, your best options if lounging outdoors close to dusk are long-sleeved clothes, DEET based repellents, and trying to prevent standing water from accumulating nearby in the yard.
