Is it fact or fiction that leaf mold made with oak leaves is bad for raised beds intended for fruits and veggies?

Expert Response

Dear Andie,

Thank you for contacting us about using oak leaves in your garden. I believe the meme you mentioned is based on a misconception largely due to the fact that oak leaves decompose slowly. There is also a negative effect on seeds, which may make it more difficult for them to germinate; however, this is a relatively short-term effect.

As with most leaf mulches, it is best to chop the leaves finely so that they decompose more quickly and do not block the flow of water. Alternatively, you can pile leaves up until they become leaf mold. I suggest mixing various kinds of leaves for best results.

The following articles address the effects of oak leaves as mulch, and you may find them helpful: I hope this answers your question. Please write again any time you have questions.
