shiny geranium #926243

Asked March 18, 2026, 2:35 PM EDT

I wish you had some information about invasive Geranium species, especially Geranium lucida. I have watched it take over every ditch and road edge and sidewalk crack in this area (SW Portland metro) in the last 10 years. Our yard also has a bad case of Geranium dissectum and possibly Geranium molle. I won't use Round Up and I've done plastic tarps and reseeding in new soil only to watch the new grass or clover become overwhelmed by geraniums. 1. Are there any other ideas for fighting it? 2. If a hoe or weed whacker, do the stem bits reroot? 3. Perhaps you could add some info on your site to warn people when they see the "pretty little pink flower" in their yard? Thanks so much.

Thank you for your question, Susan.  I am uncertain what Extension websites you have visited, but the SolvePest resource has the best advice for control of the most common geranium species:  https://solvepestproblems.oregonstate.edu/weeds/shiny-geranium

I hope its content helps resolve this ongoing problem.  Good luck!
