Rabbit Manure and compost, good for rasied beds and planters? #926105

Asked March 16, 2026, 1:14 PM EDT

Hi, I have a pet rabbit and I know that rabbit manure is cold compost and can spread directly in the garden, however everything else in the box has to go with. He goes in compacted pine litter and there is 2nd cutting timothy hay in there as well as his urine. I have been filling in my ground open raised bed all winter with this mix. (it is on top of some sand and fill from when the house was built and has had rocks over it for the last 30 years, little to none landscaping fabric or plastics. All the rocks that were there we pilled in one corner of the beds and covered with all the left over drift we had in out containers, we are planning to put lettuce on that side because it only gets partial sun. I am planning on putting paper bags or cardboard over the rabbit mix and then some garden soil from the store. Is there anything else I should do? I also have a few metal containers that have closed bottoms, can I put his manure mix in there, or would that just rot? I am on a budget and can't afford lots of dirt from the store but I could pick up some branches from around my neighborhood to help fill in. I am starting my gardening journey and I am in a town house but I would love to make a pretty edible garden.

Your project is very doable. Rabbit bedding with pine chips and hay should be composted before it is used as a growing medium. The metal tubs will need drainage holes.
