Flowering tree that doesn’t mind wet soil, sometimes mud. #925887

Asked March 12, 2026, 2:06 AM EDT

I have a wet area on a front corner of my property where I would like to plant a flowering tree that doesn’t mind soil that is muddy and kind of wet until July. Like when I try to mow there with my tractor, I can’t really mow that corner very well until it dries out in July. Then if we get a lot of rain even after July, it gets wet again in that corner. Not standing water, but wet enough that my lawn tractor will leave tracks there, until it dries out again. This is a very sunny open area, with no trees nearby.  I would like to plant a tree that doesn’t get too tall because we have a lot of lightening (open meadow that used to be cow pasture, and high elevation), and I don’t need a tall tree, just a pretty one that doesn’t mind wet soil. Can you suggest some that would do well in Broome County?

Hi Debbie!

Thank you for reaching out, this is a great question!

Some of my favorite flowering bushes that do well in wet soil are: Oak Leaf Hydrangea and Rose of Sharon. These both enjoy full sun and moist soils. Here are links to more information about each plant:

Another plant you may want to consider would be the Dappled Willow. This shrub is not know for showy flowers, but instead for its showy foliage. Willows do well in full sun and wet soils. More information about this plant can be found here:

I hope this answers your question and gives you some plant ideas for the space.
