Growing mini seedless sweet peppers in containers on deck #925886

Asked March 12, 2026, 1:42 AM EDT

Last summer I grew Green Bell Peppers in 5 gallon pots on my deck. They produced a lot of peppers, but were a little bitter. This summer I want to grow mini seedless sweet peppers in containers. Can you please give me advice about good mini seedless sweet peppers (not spicy) to grow in containers, in Broome County, on my deck? It’s a sunny deck. And I’m somewhat of a beginner, although my whole container garden did well last summer. So, tell me what size pots, additives, etc.. I’m willing to start seeds inside for the sweet peppers, or to just buy young plants.

Hi Debbie!

Thank you for reaching out, I am happy to give you more information!

Here are two mini bell pepper varieties that I think you might like to try:

When selecting a container for growing plants, I recommend you get one that is one to two feet larger than the expected width growth of the plant. For example, if a plant is predicted to grow two feet wide, I would get a pot that is three to four feet wide.

As for potting soil, I would recommend a garden soil mix. The bags you get at a garden center or any other place they sell soil labeled "garden soil" should have plenty of nutrients for the peppers.

You can defiantly start your pepper seeds inside. However, if you decide to go with the "Pepper Sweetie Pie" listed above, it is recommended you buy the young plant instead of starting the plant from seed.

I hope this answers your questions. If you have anymore, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Best wishes,
