Sweet Birch Tree Planting or Not #925751

Asked March 10, 2026, 8:38 AM EDT

I recently saw Sweet Birch trees at my wholesale plant company here in Michigan. Are these trees ok to plant near our woods line or would these prove to be invasive?

Hello,
It is not considered aggressive at this time, though it is not a native to Michigan.  (It's native range is NE US, roughly from Maine to easter Ohio.)
It would be safer to plant one of the many trees native to Michigan for many reasons. One, as you mentioned, is that it could become aggressive or invasive with time.  Secondly, the tree does appear to be vulnerable to some diseases and insects.

I have attached a table of native Michigan trees, perhaps one of those might be of interest to you.
