Pecan tree issue #925750

Asked March 10, 2026, 8:30 AM EDT

It would not allow upload of more pictures. I have more detailed and up close. It’s three pecan trees affected.

Expert Response

It's hard to see enough detail from photos in this case, but the fine holes present suggest the presence of either bark beetles or ambrosia beetles (more likely the former than the latter). They might be old holes, though, so the insects responsible might not still be around. We recommend you have a certified arborist examine the tree. Arborists can't always treat every condition (by the time such beetles create exit holes in the bark, that generation's damage has been done), but can help narrow-down a diagnosis and evaluate the health of the tree. Tree stress often predisposes them to attack by these types of borers, so even if the borers can be controlled, unless the issue stressing the tree can be addressed, new generations of borers can keep being drawn to the tree.
