Fragrant Sumac stump removal #925747

Asked March 10, 2026, 12:42 AM EDT

Looking for information on the best, and most effective way to remove the stumps from several fragrant sumacs. We had them cut down to the ground last week with the thought that we would see if they grow back but now am thinking it is time to just remove them and re-landscape this section of our yard.

Expert Response

Fragrant Sumac is a rambling shrub and as such  you may be able do dig them yourself.  If the trunks are quite large, you may want to call a Tree Care Professional and have them ground out.

Fragrant Sumacs may deteriorate more quickly and be easier to dig out. Once you have cut the main trunk they may deteriorate quickly. You could try digging them this spring, or wait to see if they re-sprout anywhere,
