Weed & Feed vs separate applications of fertilizer & weed killer #925726

Asked March 09, 2026, 5:50 PM EDT

Are separate applications of fertilizer and weed killer better than a Weed & Feed, particularly when addressing crabgrass control? One lawn company I contacted does one application for crabgrass. I thought 2 applications were needed for control of the weed. I have concerns with Weed & Feed, but want a educated opinion. Lawn Care Service businesses are oft times concerned with convenience even though it may be less effective. Thank You.

Hi Rose,

Crabgrass is an annual and the best way to control it is with one application of a pre-emergent herbicide when soil temperatures have reached 55 degrees. Usually that’s from mid-April to mid-May.

Weed and feeds are applied from May to early June, when weeds are visible.

Hope this helps.
