(Hibiscus coccineus or Hibiscus moscheutos).
These perennials typically die back to the ground each winter and send up new growth in spring. Now is a good time to cut the plant back (late winter or early spring) before the new growth begins. Leave about 6-inches of stem intact to mark the plant location since they tend to be very slow to emerge.
