Hello,
This fungus looks like it belongs to the Marasmiaceae family. These fungi tend to grow on rotting wood. When they grow on a tree trunk, there is a possibility that there is rot in the interior of the tree. Michigan State Extension Plant and Pest Diagnostic Lab can give you the correct diagnosis and what can be done about it. To learn how to send a sample/photo to the lab, go to: https://www.canr.msu.edu/pestid/
A certified arborist will be able to assess the tree. To find an arborist in your area, go to: www.treesaregood.org, the website of the International Society of Arboriculture.
