Asked March 04, 2026, 4:05 PM EST

Are my sweet potatoes slips ready to be planted or should I put the sweet potato in soil to continue to grow?

Expert Response

If you are asking about planting them outside, no, the soil is much too cold still to plant them in the ground or in a container outdoors. Indoors, slips can be started ahead of planting season to propagate the plant for planting out later in spring when we are closer to the last frost date. We have more details about starting slips indoors on our Growing Sweet Potatoes page (see link), plus a short video demonstrating their planting and the pricking of the slips for planting into containers (to mature a bit before going outside) or out in the garden.

As indicated on our Vegetable Planting Calendar, usually sweet potato slips are started in mid-April, but since your roots have begun to grow already, you may have to plant them (inside) now so they can start establishing for later transplanting. Using grow lights above them as a light source is the best method, as a sunny window alone might not provide enough light. The young plants can be transplanted outside around mid-May (potentially late April for your area, if the soil is warm enough a couple inches deep).
