Fungus on Rudbeckia and Joe Pye Weed #925404

Asked March 04, 2026, 11:09 AM EST

Can I give to my garden club for their plant sale Rudbeckia 'Goldsturm" if during the growing season it is prone to Black Spot mold? I control it during the growing season with copper and and a systemic bio fungicide by Bonide. I plan to dig it up early this season and rinse off any soil. Also I have a large bed (3'x6') of Joe Pye Weed that probably gets too much shade. Over the last few seasons it has been developing the white mold that eventually kills the leaves. I remove any ailing leaves and I use the same bio fungicide with pretty good results. However using that as often as I need to is no picnic! If we are away for a bit I come back to a lot of dead leaves. Digging it up would be daunting and I am not sure what to replace it with. Appreciate any input you may have. Thanks!

Hi Cynthia,

Thank you for contacting the UNH Extension Yard and Garden Infoline with your questions about donating your Rubeckia plants to your garden club plant sale and about how to control powdery mildew on your Joe Pye Weed plants.

I have included a link to a fact sheet that provides guidance about how to end the gardening season.  It recommends, "DO remove potential sources of disease for next season. Remove plant parts with powdery mildew, black spot, early blight, etc. Don’t compost them, as that can potentially spread disease problems further."

You can donate your Rudbeckia plants to your garden club plant sale as long as the plants are healthy and do not have black spot when you donate them.  Full sun can help prevent black spot.  I have included links to a few fact sheets that discuss how to grow Rudbeckia plants.
