Garlic #925347

Asked March 03, 2026, 11:40 AM EST

I planted my garlic in November I failed to get any mulch over it but we had plenty of snow. Now that all the snow is melting I do have leaves and some straw to put over the garlic. But my concern is with all this warm temperature this week if that's going to start thawing out soil too early?

Expert Response

If the ground hasn’t thawed already adding mulch will keep the ground frozen longer. Although temperatures in the upper 50s and above will thaw the ground regardless. The last few years spring thaws have been early and temperatures stayed in the 50s through May. If you wish to experiment, half or a third of the plot could be covered now and results compared at harvest.
