Expert Response

Thanks for your question.

As you are aware, this tree cannot be planted outside at this time (early March 2026). The problem confronting you is that this tree should not be subject to repetitive freezing and thawing before you plant it. If you leave it outside in its current state, this is precisely what may happen. I would suggest the following:

1). Open the box immediately. Do not leave the sealed box outside. This would promote fungal growth and/or root death.

2). Once the box is opened and the tree removed from the bucket, examine its roots. They should have a moist feel to them. If not and they appear dry, lightly mist or wrap them inn damp (not dripping) peat, sawdust, or shredded paper.

3). Then loosely (you want to have the roots partially exposed to the air) place the tree back in the bucket and then into the box. Alternately, you could put the bucket in a large plastic bag (leave top open for airflow). This air exposure will slow any fungal growth.

4). Then once back in the box or a plastic bag, store in an unheated garage or in any location where the temperature is in the range of 28–40°F. It should be kept out of direct sunlight as well. Periodically check to be sure the roots remain damp but not soggy. Further misting may be necessary. Maintain the tree in this state until you are ready to transplant it later in the spring (early to mid-April).
