Native evergreen shrub for some poultry shade/wind protection! #925140

Asked February 27, 2026, 11:28 AM EST

Hi! We have 6 ducks we raise for eggs, and this winter I feel they need some other wind and shade protection. Currently, we have serviceberries in their coop area which are quite unhappy with all the water they received from the ducks last summer. My spring plan is to try and move the serviceberries to a happier place and plan some sort of evergreen shrub in their place. Any recommendations for a native option? Nothing more that 5 ft would be great. Thanks so much!

Hello Laura,

I understand your problem and your process.  Glad you will be able to move and save your serviceberries.  I have included 3 links to articles that will provide you with quite a few tips about different shrubs that could fit in your space.  They are from PA and IA though so it will be important for you to consult with your local nursery to see what would fit in your particular climate.
