Soil extraction for sample tool to loan? #925119

Asked February 26, 2026, 6:23 PM EST

Hi. I recently ordered your Soil Test kit which should be arriving any day now. I am currently enrolled in the FOG course (love) and watched a demonstration video on taking a soil sample for the test kit. The gentleman running the menu had a cool tool that sticks into the ground and takes a sample- almost like a biopsy. And I thought he mentioned that there might be a chance we could borrow one of those sticks from a local MSU Extension site. So I am trying to ascertain if that is possible for me. I live in Shelby (West Michigan). Does this make sense? Many thanks for any response.

Thank-you for your question. I am glad you are enjoying the FOG class. I’m not sure what video was shown in FOG about soil testing. Many people just use a trowel or soil knife when doing a soil test. However, I am guessing you are referring to a soil probe.

The MSU extension office in for Oceana County does have a couple of soil probes that they lend out. You can contact them by phone to find out specific information and make arrangements. Their phone number is<personal data hidden>

The office is located at 844 S. Griswold St., Suite 400 Hart, MI 49420.
