Fruit tree variety for my area #925112

Asked February 26, 2026, 4:33 PM EST

Hello, I'm researching fruit tree varieties as a first time fruit tree grower. I usually buy my apples from a local farmers market each year for apple butter and apple sauce. I prefer the apples Gala and Golden Delicious for my apple butter and jonagold for my apple sauce. I hope to grow some of my own apples for these purposes, but I want to make sure if a tree variety is actually compatible with my area here in Michigan. I have found some trees on Stark Bros.com that might fit, but I would appreciate some professional insight from a local source. Any tips on what variety to look for in a tree? The two varieties I found online were called Stark Golden Delicious Semi Dwarf and Stark Grand Gala. Those are the only two I could find that might be a good variety.

Golden Delicious, Gala, and Jonagold will grow in Michigan. I am sorry if you know this, but the rootstock is bred separately from the variety, and they are grafted together. I would look for a semi-dwarf rootstock or a bit bigger if you don't want to stake your trees. Here is an article about rootstocks and the choices.

I can help you choose a specific rootstock once you know what you want for tree size.
