Addition fo white clover to a bluegrass lawn #925041

Asked February 25, 2026, 2:07 PM EST

I recently moved to a home in Duluth that has a bluegrass lawn. I grew up with a clover/bluegrass lawn in Iowa and had patches of clover in a bluegrass lawn in the Twin Cities. I wish to add clover to my lawn in Duluth. What is the best way to approach this? Can I simply broadcast clover seed onto the lawn, or "rough up" the lawn after spreading the seed? Also, how much seed per sq. yd. should be spread?

Expert Response

You can add clover to your existing bluegrass lawn by overseeding in early spring or late summer when soil temperatures are between 50°F and 80°F. Because clover seeds are tiny, you could mix them with another product such as sand or sawdust to ensure even distribution and prevent them from being buried too deeply.  Sow the seeds and then rake and/or core aerate to make sure they touch the soil and will germinate.  For helpful information about this process, see https://extension.illinois.edu/news-releases/microclovers-making-comeback-lawns-grow-biodiversity
