Witch hazel plant care #925011

Asked February 24, 2026, 4:30 PM EST

I was gifted (via mail) a witch hazel plant this week. It has bare stems (some buds?) and has a root ball with mulch in a plastic wrap (around the root ball). The plant is appproximately 3 ft high (including root ball about the size of a soccer ball). Awesome! It’s February. What do I do with it? Not sure if I should plant it outside…. Keep it under some kind of grow light….set it by a window and pray? I have multiple outdoor planting locations available on my 3-acre property. Sun/shade/slope/flat/mostly clay soil/pond access all available. Appreciate any help or guidance on helping grow my first witch hazel!

Thank you for your question.

Witch Hazel thrives best in full sun to partial shade.

Early spring is ideal to plant, however, wait until the soil can be worked as the ground thaws usually by April.
