Testing Residential Soil for Pesticides, Other Chemicals #924972

Asked February 23, 2026, 8:53 PM EST

Are there any recommended avenues to test residential soil for pesticides and other chemicals? We recently bought a house built in the mid 1970s and I hope to eventually plant an organic garden. I would like to keep pesticide and ideally PFAS exposure to a minimum.

Thanks for the question. Congratulations on your new house and dudes for wanting to start a vegetable garden.

We always recommend a soil test for your lawn and garden every 3 years or so. The general test will tell you the composition of your soil and the nutrients in it currently and will give you a recommendation for fertilizer, if needed. You can also test for lead if you have concerns or other micronutrients.

Testing for PFA’s is general for water. I see that you live in Hennepin County. IF you have city drinking water you should be able to find analysis on their website. IF you have a private well, information from the MN Department of Health is below.

Also, if you are starting a vegetable garden we have a Vegetable Growing Basics class starting March 7th if you are interested: These classes are offered every year.
