Protecting tree roots under sidewalk repair #924941

Asked February 23, 2026, 1:54 PM EST

Portland (city) is requiring us to repair several sidewalks. There are heaved areas over sections that are adjacent to cherry and cedar trees. We are not sure whether we can trim these roots out of the repair area or what other options we might have. At least five arborists we consulted state that they do not do such root evaluation/trimming. The sidewalk repair is on hold until we know what to do about these roots and the sidewalk is already partially torn up. What can we do? Are there local (North Portland) resources that can help us? Thank you

Expert Response

Unfortunately, we do not have arborists that could come out and evaluate.

I know it's not much help, but the city of Portland has this article, which may have a little more information.

You're right: not much help, especially when the city recommends the work be done by a certified arborist and there don't seem to be any who will do the work. But we appreciate your response; thank you.
