Raising landscape with established roses #924867

Asked February 21, 2026, 2:32 PM EST

Hello. I have 6 established roses in my front yard that have been there for at least 10 years. I would like to raise the landscape level around them, but I am guessing that covering the bottom 12" or so would notbe a good thing. Is there any way I could do this without moving the roses? And if I have to remove/replant the roses, what is my success rate?

Hello,

Can you explain a little more about why you will be raising the entire soil level? Will you also be raising the soil around other existing plants (besides the roses), like trees?

Adding 12" of soil would not be recommended...and even adding that much mulch/bark could be detrimental.

If you plan to ago ahead with adding soil, you could dig out the roses, going out as far as possible with the largest root system, and then replant once the new grade has been established.
