Replanting #924756

Hello, we have a peach tree which unfortunately developed bacterial canker in the trunk. I think that tree needs to go, but we were wondering if any other fruit trees (particularly pear) would be able to go in that spot. I understand stone fruits are not an option. Curious about other ones though.

Expert Response

Hi William,

This is a tough question. The bacteria that causes cankers in peaches can affect a broad group of trees, including not only stone fruits but apples, pears and even some types of maples.

It would be safer to plant in a different area. If you must plant in the same spot, dig out as many of the peach roots as you can and leave the area fallow for a year. Avoid stone fruits. If you really want a fruit tree try something like apple or serviceberry. Plant at the proper depth (not too deep), water young trees regularly right up until the ground freezes and prune only when the plant is dormant in winter. The bacteria attacks mostly stressed trees.

Hope this helps. Thanks.
