inoculant for legumes #924724

Asked February 17, 2026, 10:48 PM EST

I purchased some pea seeds, and they recommend using an inoculant. However, I don't seem to be able to find any locally. There are some "mycorrhizal" products. would these be virtually the same thing? Also, is there a real need to use such products?

Expert Response

Thank you for your question.  No; mycorrhizal products are not the same as inoculants.  Inoculants are bacteria which help peas (a legume with microscopic root nodes that “fix” nitrogen, by converting it into a molecule plants can absorb).  Mycorrhizal products are fungi which help perennial, woody plants obtain minerals from the surrounding soil.

There are several sources of inoculants available through the Internet, and most farm supply stores carry them.  These help peas which are planted in areas which have not had pea (or other legumes) crops there before.  Extension sources recommend using them.  https://yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu/faq/do-i-need-treat-my-peas-inoculant-planting
Good luck!
