Caring for everbearing strawberry bare root plant #924719

Asked February 17, 2026, 6:21 PM EST

Hi! I received several everbearing strawberry bare root plants much earlier than I anticipated. How do I take care of them until they can be planted outside mid-March? Thank you!

Expert Response

Hi,

The most important thing is to keep them cool and moist. If they didn't come in any planting media (peat moss etc.) or hydrogel substance, you will want to put them in that in a small container or bag. If they came from some transplants from another gardener, they should be in soil. If you want to plant them, just keep them from drying out until the ground is workable. You could also wash off the soil and put them in a soilless medium (potting mix) until you can get them to their permanent location. You can keep them in a cool garage, shed, on a porch, or against your home -anywhere where they are not getting a lot of sun and warming up (no south-facing walls). Heat and eventually the increasing day length could send them into early production which a hard frost could damage.

As soon as the ground dries a bit and is not frozen, you could plant them if your bed space is ready, or if you are planning on growing them in a container, you could plant now and just protect from any future extreme low temperatures for the rest of the winter.

Thank you so much!
