How to purchase an extension publication #924657

Asked February 16, 2026, 3:56 PM EST

How do I purchase this publication: Ecology and Management of Eastern Oregon Forests: A Comprehensive Manual for Forest Managers. I am raking a class with John Punches of OSU Extension, who is using it extensively. Thank you.

Expert Response

We don't have a print version of this available, but we do have the PDF version for free.

This is the most recent version, from 2022.

Amy, thanks for responding to my inquiry.  I am taking a class presently with John Punches of OSU Extension who is teaching students about Eastern Oregon forests.

The online version is helpful, but an actual copy would be even more beneficial.  Do you know of any way to acquire one?  I find it very informative, and I would be willing to purchase one.  Some of us simply prefer a hard copy for reference purposes. I plan to travel to Eastern Oregon later this year, and I would love to have an actual copy with me during my travels.

I have an OSU Library copy in my possession, but the book is due back shortly.   Your help is most appreciated!

Paul

I don't know of any print copies in existence, unfortunately.

It's not optimal, but if you really wanted one, you could download it to a flash drive, then take it to a print store (Staples, UPS Store, FedEx, Kinkos, Office Depot) and have them print it for you. It won't be cheap - probably about $0.30 per double-sided page, and 243 pages (single sided), so a little less than the $40 it costs for the 2018 edition. Still cheaper than replacing your own printer's ink cartridge, I would guess.

Part of what made us stop printing hard copies of publications such as this is that the science changes so quickly. If you look at the image on the site, that's the cover from the 2018 version, and we already made changes. Our standard we try to adhere to is reviewing at least every five years and making sure the science still matches with what was best practices at the time. If we have print versions, then we can't update them, and any we don't sell go into the landfill.

I believe I found another way to obtain this book — through LaGrande or Baker City extension offices.  I will likely order a copy this week.  John Punches has been teaching a course this quarter on these forests, and his web site suggests buying it from one of these offices.   I have now an OSU Library copy of the book, and I think the purchase cost is reasonable.  See the following.

  • Ecology and Management of Eastern Oregon Forests. PDF version (free). Full-color printed copies available from the Union County or Baker County OSU Extension Offices. $40 plus shipping.
    • Union County Extension Office. 10507 N. McAlister Rd., Suite 9, La Grande OR 97850.<personal data hidden>
    • Baker County OSU Extension Office. 2600 East St., Baker City OR 97814.s<personal data hidden>

That's great! I wonder if they have some left over from before we stopped printing them. I'm glad you found a solution!
