Help selecting plants for a privacy boarder #924630

Asked February 16, 2026, 9:56 AM EST

Hello. I live in Westminster, CO, and am looking for a couple of options for plants to create a privacy border on the west side of my backyard. Ideally, I would like plants that grow to 4-5 ft (taller is okay as long as they don't require extensive maintenance). The area gets full sun. It's not very windy in our area (however, I'm happy to put up a wind break in the winter months). We have a drip line for watering and can water in the winter if needed. The soil has a lot of clay, but I can amend it if needed. I would like an evergreen plant. I really like the look of boxwoods, but would prefer something that grows faster. I also would prefer something that doesn't have "sticky" needles, as we have pets and kids. I'm also open to alternating plant types if they work well together. Thank you so much for your time!

Sarah,
There are a lot of great evergreen options that are either broadleaf or coniferous. Please peruse this list https://extension.colostate.edu/resource/evergreen-shrubs/ for a wide range. Some popular choices from that list include pyracantha, Oregon grape holly, broom. If you don't mind venturing into partially evergreen you could look at wayfaring tree viburnum or Yardline viburnum. They hold their leaves through most of the winter and have a great growth habit.
I'm also including our native trees and shrubs list in case any of the native shrubs appeal to you: https://extension.colostate.edu/resource/native-shrubs-for-colorado-landscapes/
Let me know if you have additional questions!
