Will liquid corn gluten prevent Hellabore germination? #924604

Asked February 15, 2026, 11:44 AM EST

I love Hellabores blooming in mid to late winter, but hate how prolific they are with seed germination. Will either corn gluten granuals or liquid corn gluten prevent Hellabore seeds from germinating?

I need some way to control the thousands of seedlings.

Thanks

Expert Response

Corn gluten is not generally an effective preemergent, meaning many of your Hellebore seeds are likely to sprout anyhow. This WSU publication has information about the research and conclusions. There are preemergent herbicides available.
Instead, I have had good luck covering the soil thickly with wood mulch like arborist chips, see this publication from WSU. Some seeds still sprout, but I can hoe most of them loose before roots set deeply.
The most effective mechanical technique is to deadhead the plants before seeds set.
