Expert Response

There are a couple resources to help you find species that occur locally. Maryland Biodiversity Project collects observations of all species in the state (native and otherwise, though non-native species are marked as such in their profile pages), and it lists 8 species of Phlox found in Maryland. Each species page includes a distribution map for where wild plants have been found (it does not include cultivated specimens). Only one of those listed species is non-native; two of the others are state-rare; the rest are generally widely distributed across the state.

More broadly, the Maryland Native Plant Guide for the Piedmont Region and the Commercial Native Plant List, both resources that can be found on the Maryland Native Plant Program web page, have hundreds of species in their databases, though they are categorized by region (coastal plain, piedmont, and mountain) within Maryland, not county-by-county. These resources don't list every species occurrence the way MBP does, but rather focus on those species more likely for a home gardener to be able to obtain, since those two reference lists are centered around garden use.

The main three Phlox species found in Frederick and most other counties are Moss Phlox (Phlox subulata), Fall/Garden/Tall Phlox (Phlox paniculata), and Wild Blue Phlox (Phlox divaricata).
