I received 3 bundles on day neutral onion plants today. Please, when can I plant these in the garden? How do I care for these onion bunches until it’s time to plant the in the garden?

Expert Response

Thanks for contacting 'ask extension' with your question about planting onion starts. In Benton County, onion starts are planted between March and May.  depending on the workability of your soil. Planting in early in March will give your plants time to develop larger bulbs,
Plant the starts about 1 inch deep. Plant them 4 inches apart if you want them to fully mature.
If you plan on picking some early you can plant  2 inches apart, then harvest every other plant to use as a green onion and leave the rest to mature.

While waiting for March, separate the bundles and store in a cool, dry location. Do not water.
Hope this helps!
