Sourcing Fruit Trees #924360

Asked February 09, 2026, 11:08 AM EST

Hi, I am looking for a nursery source for Prunus americana, Montmorency cherry, and a variety of pawpaw cultivars. I am specifically looking for cultivated varieties of papaws and not just the straight species. I know Montmorency cherries may be easy to find or at least something similar so the American plum and the pawpaw varieties are of more importance to me. Do you have any suggestions for nurseries within 2-3 hours of Dayton, OH where I might be able to source this material? Thanks.

Expert Response

Hi Todd,

Good to hear from you! We normally purchase our plants from Stark Brothers and Indiana Berry. Most of our tree fruit growers get their trees from Adams County Nursery in PA. I am not aware of any nurseries that are with 2-3 hours drive from Dayton.

Dr. Logan Minter works on pawpaws at OSU. Follow this link for his contact information:

Kentucky State U. is the leading U for pawpaw breeding work and named cultivars. Here is a link to their webpage: https://www.kysu.edu/academics/college-ahnr/school-of-anr/pawpaw/index.php

Hope this helps.
