yard watering this winter #924311

Asked February 07, 2026, 10:07 AM EST

What should we be watering in these warm, dry days with this lack of snow or other moisture this winter... we're in north Boulder, with an older, established yard; with mature trees, and also young apple trees; also many older climbing roses, as well as hybrid roses, all "put to bed" as usual last fall; and lots of bulb flowers, many showing new shoots now. thank you!

Hi Randy,
Thank you for reaching out to us regarding winter watering your yard.  With this dry Fall, dry and warm January,  most likely your outdoor garden will need some supplemental watering.

Here is an article on winter watering.

Fall and Winter Watering of Plants and Trees | Colorado State University Extension Website

A quick summary for you
  • If you have not have 12" inches of snow (equates to 1" of precipitation) for 30 days, then typically you need to water your garden.
  • Only water when the outside temperature is above 40 degree F and the soil is not frozen.
  • Water newly planted trees, evergreens, and spring bulbs first.  Then water the rest of your garden as needed.  Each plant winter watering need is slightly different depending on the plant's water need, sun exposure, and wind exposure.
  • You can use a moisture stick or a screwdriver to see how dry the soil is.
