Prepping a new permaculture market garden #924305
Asked February 06, 2026, 10:19 PM EST
Greetings.
What are the best practices and order of them turning .5 of an old 1.5 acre hay field into a polyculture market garden containing diverse veggies, herbs, flower hedge rows, perennial windbreaks?
My understanding so far is to
Spread aged manure on .5 of 1.5 field
-Till the .5 area to turn under existing cover and loosen the soil for shaping
-Shape the mounds for beds, creating ditches and berms for water retention and direction towards futrure in garden ponds
-cover beds with compost & mulch (need help here with what's best for soil with 2.5% organic matter, 6.6pH, 69.0 lime index, very low phosphorus: 8 ppm. Potassium 40 ppm, magnesium 185 ppm, virtually no micronutrients)
-Potentially add tarp over that? Catepillar tunnel?
-Install irrigation (We are without power for now...so rain harvesting gutters & bins attached to lines..? Shaped earth to slight contour lines? Extra deep rows between beds?) Extra help needed here.
-Plant Perennials
-Wait for ideal conditions to direct sew indivudal crops
(Starting indoors at large scale or obtaining powered greenhouse may be out of the question this season...so how else best start seeds for any transplanting?)
-Weed, maintain, and continue to build
