Growing Marshall strawberries on the Oregon coast. #924206

Asked February 03, 2026, 5:35 PM EST

I have read all OSU info on strawberries. I am 1/2 mile from lower coos bay/beach in the fog line. I trimmed and fertilized my berries last august/September per instructions. However, due to warm/wet climate dormancy is December and January only. The plants grew all fall and will start growing again soon. Can I reprune them so they aren't bushy monsters by June?

Expert Response

Thanks for your question.

Heavy pruning should be avoided.   However, as with all June-bearing strawberries, you can always remove any old, dead, or dying leaves and stolons.   You can also remove any stolons that didn't produce daughters.  You should also thin plants to 6-8 inches apart.    Light pruning and clearing debris from the crowns should help improve air circulation and possibly help reduce disease.
