Hi Mark,
Thank you for contacting the UNH Extension Yard and Garden Infoline with your question about treatments for carpenter ants. I have included links to a few fact sheets that discuss the problem.
https://extension.unh.edu/sites/default/files/migrated_unmanaged_files/Resource000530_Rep552.pdf
This fact sheet notes that "During the winter the nests are inactive but individuals occasionally come out on warm days." It also notes that "Due to recent regulatory changes, there are fewer products available for use by someone without a pesticide applicator’s license."
There is also a whole paragraph devoted to a discussion of bait cups and one on how to locate a nest.

Because the first fact sheet notes that nests are inactive in winter, I have also included links to fact sheets that discuss termites.

https://homegarden.cahnr.uconn.edu/factsheets/termites-and-carpenter-ants/
This fact sheet discusses the use of aerosol sprays both for locating ant nests and as a treatment which differs from the UNH fact sheet which does not recommend the use of sprays.

Based on the information I have provided, you may need to consult a professional pest control service to ensure that you have identified the pest correctly and to receive the best treatment.
