What ready-to-use herbicides are available to kill thorny olive? (Elaeagnus pungens) #924170

Asked February 03, 2026, 9:00 AM EST

Hello, I have some thorny olive bushes that I can't stand and want to get rid of permanently. I'm looking for a ready-to-use herbicide that I can use to kill them for good. My plan is to cut them down short, then apply the herbicide to the cut stems afterwards, so a recommendation that works best for that application would be appreciated. Thank you for your time!

We don't maintain a reference database of pesticide products/brands, as they change over time due to manufacturer reformulations and other factors. Systemic treatments that would help kill a cut stump include glyphosate and triclopyr, the two most commonly-available active ingredients in that category. You'd need to check the product label to verify it can be used in a cut-stump application (or basal bark spray, though that's usually applied without cutting the plant down first, which could compromise its efficacy). Usually, cut-stump applications need to be made within minutes of the cut being made. In some cases, you might be able to use it during winter, but the label will note any temperature restrictions.

Use caution that any systemic application is not sprayed/dripped onto desirable plants nearby, as that could damage them. Triclopyr can be more risky to use with regards to the potential for contaminating water runoff more readily than glyphosate (which binds tightly to soil if it contacts the ground), so bear in mind risks to nearby habitat/vegetation if the area you want to treat is uphill of desirable plantings or near streams, a garden pond, or other surface water. Any additional usage precautions will be noted on the product label, which will be unique for each product formulation.
