How I can I help soil to recover after stump grinding? #924155

Asked February 02, 2026, 5:22 PM EST

Hello Master Gardeners, We live in Multnomah County, in Portland. Last September, we had an old, rotting plum tree removed as it was putting up sucker shoots. Hence, the stump grinding. This left a corner of our backyard garden in a foot or so of mud. Foolishly, I added a layer of fresh dry leaves to it, only to discover this isn't a good idea. The site is in a corner that only gets morning sun/afternoon shade, so it hasn't dried out. It's pretty impossible to walk on without using a cardboard path. I'd love advice as to how to help the soil recover, and how long I should wait before planting things in. Thank you.

Thank you for your question, Hazel.  We suggest obtaining some compost and spreading it above and around the area.  You can mound it over the wet area, add some clay or topsoil in or over the compost, and your area should be back in shape before year’s end.  This is a helpful resource:  https://extension.oregonstate.edu/catalog/ec-1561-improving-garden-soils-organic-matter
