outdoor plant relocation #924101

Asked January 31, 2026, 11:55 AM EST

Hello, I'm looking to move some salvias and potentials this year. Since the winter has been so dry and warm, should/could I do it now while they're sleeping or should I wait until spring (March)? Thank you, Casey

Hi Casey,

It's best to wait until you see your perennials pushing new, strong growth for spring before moving them--depending on the weather, that could be anywhere from March to May!

I hope this is helpful.

Cordially,

John

Hi John. Will do and thank you! Out of curiosity, why not move them while they’re ’sleeping’?

Good question!  It's because the move is going to be disruptive, no matter how careful you are, and you want the plant to be metabolically active in order to respond.  It's not that you can't move them now, it's just that your chances of success are better if the plant is "awake."

Good luck!
