RHb for garden #923925

Asked January 26, 2026, 10:29 AM EST

Hello! Been reading about Radix Hybrid bulbosa and wondering if I could use it anywhere for lawn or garden. Since it goes dormant during the growing season, could I plant my vegetable and flower beds with it and then just pop my (annual) seedlings in every year? Or would this offer no advantage?

Washtenaw County Michigan

Expert Response

I also did some reading about it.  I don't think this would ultimately be a benefit.  It seems it is usually used for field crops, orchards and vineyards as a way to deter weeds, but not home gardens.  My concern is that it may not go completely dormant and then you will be fighting it in your flower or vegetable garden as a weed.  It won't be easy to remove if you do discover that becomes weedy.

It also sounds like this is more useful in a climate where they don't have real winters.  To take full advantage of fall planting you would want the grass to grow all winter long.  That wouldn't be the case here in Michigan.  It would have an extremely short growing time, which probably wouldn't be beneficial.

I don't recommend doing this because I couldn't find research on it in home gardens.  If you do try it, please be aware that it may not be easy to remove if you don't like the results.
